The Story of our Sled

By Walker Blankinship

When we took over the barn 16 years ago we found a sled when we were cleaning up.

I could tell it was a sled because of the runners. The rest was a rotted wreck. For a while I could not figure out what the spiked boards were. I then realized that the spikes were what was left of springs from the upholstery that had rotted away. There were many bits and pieces including a rusted metal grill that I could not figure out what it had to do with a sled.

Lucky for me we had an expert in sleds in the family, a man named Teddy who married my mother's cousin. He keeps his best sled in his living room. Teddy stored the sled for a while until he had time to take it to someone to work on it. He then took it to an Amish man in Lancaster who he knew could restore it. It went to Riehl's Carriage Shop.

I have to say I would never have found this place with out Teddy. The lettering on the mailbox was two inches high and otherwise Riehl's Carriage Shop looks like all the other neat white farm houses.

Wow! I was so surprised when I saw the finished sled. I call it The Throne. I do not think it was this fancy even when it was new. It was black and burgundy with gold trim. The rusted metal grill piece now replated sits on top in the front. I discovered that the bends in the metal on it help guide the reins!

Fergus is happy to pull the sled as we discovered. Now we have to think about how to involve the public. Christmas card pictures, fundraising sled driving or even movies are some of our ideas. (3/16/2008)
